strings&noise has set itself the goal of making new music exciting and stimulating – for both experienced and untrained ears. The focus is on an intensive search for the many sound and noise possibilities of the two string instruments. The two musicians are not afraid to go to the limits of what can be played and to use objects, preparations, voice and body. String instruments are still often associated with cloying euphony – this prejudice is debunked with great pleasure. Since its founding in 2015, strings&noise has therefore been increasingly involved with pieces that incorporate other media, such as video and electronics, or even performance elements. Collaboration with composers working in this direction is specifically sought.
Svenska Jack
”I like to knob until a zzzzt becomes a frchrs’k. It’s not more difficult than that.”
Swedish Jack attached contact mics to his synthesizers and pedals. The sound of pressing and knobing becomes part of the composition. What should not be heard can take place, like putting tap shoes on the ballet dancer. Here, electroacoustics is mixed with unsynchronized rhythms, glitch and industrial reverberation.
Behind the name “Svenska Jack” is the stage poet Matiss Silins. He wanted to create background sounds for his poetry and acquired some musical instruments. The sounds took over. The poetry remains but it’s in the background, a special effect.
As a clarinetist, Robert Ek has specialized in contemporary music as a chamber musician and soloist. With great curiosity and commitment, he himself and together with composers tries to develop the repertoire for the clarinet. He has recorded around twenty discs and premiered a large number of works as a soloist and ensemble musician. His work in developing the repertoire has in recent years been focused on live electronics and developing the clarinet as an instrument. Robert has performed and collaborated with musicians, composers and conductors from different parts of the world. He likes to work in the borderland between art forms and has had close collaborations not only with composers but also with writers, choreographers and filmmakers. Robert has toured Europe, North America, Asia and Australia and played at festivals such as Warzaw autumn, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, June in Buffalo, Faithful (Berlin), ISCM world music days in Stockholm and Tallinn, Musica Viva (Lisbon), Beijing Modern Music Festival.
Max Wainwright makes experimental electronic and acoustic music, involving free improvisation, adapting to complex systems, and making & using terrible instruments. He does solo and collaborative performances, installations, sculpture, radio pieces, chamber composition, video work and more. As an artist, he is concerned with states of flux and how useless or broken objects can be sounded. He likes to engage audiences and things in conversation, creating instruments, trading, donating or receiving things, and performing on these. Using these, he explores human-technology interaction, deconstructing live performance, futility and effort, and performing through inactivity.
